thecrazyalaskan: (Michael x KITT)

To anyone else, Kitt was a woman sitting on the hood of her Trans AM, looking thoughtful as she alternated between looking at something in her hands and looking over the pit of industrial acid that had nearly been the end of her Trans AM. She was indeed thoughtful, but any outside observer would have been very surprised to hear the Trans AM speak. What's that?

She looked up and over her shoulder slightly. "What was that, Michael?"

What's that you're holding? Michael, the Trans AM, repeated.

"My engagement ring from Steven," Kitt replied, turning the item over in her hand. It was a thin silver band with a small pink diamond for the stone. Very simple and tasteful, but with a hell of a lot of memories attached to it.

Michael turned the words over in his CPU. The one who had you—

"The very same," Kitt confirmed, studying the ring. "I was looking forward to marrying him." She chuckled without humor. "I thought he was the one." So saying, she slid off Michael's hood, looked down at the ring once more and tossed the ring into the acid pit, nodding self-assuredly as it went in with a plop.

What was that for? Michael asked, surprised. I thought you were keeping it—

"I don't need that ring anymore," Kitt said, shaking her head. A breeze had kicked up, and she brushed a few wisps of hair out of her face. "It was just a reminder of who Katherine Long was and what she almost had. What was I going to get, hmm?" She lifted her hands as if appealing to the heavens. "Dirty money, dubious morals and a piece of garbage for a partner. Why do I want to remember that… that tripe?" She turned away from the pit, shaking her head again. "If I can ever tell him how I feel about him now, fine. If not, fine. All I know for certain is, I can do better."

How so? Michael asked softly.

"Well, I have you for starters," she replied, patting his hood. She thought to how close she had come to losing Michael, how terrified they both had been as he'd sunk in the pit that was now consuming most of a forklift and an old engagement ring. It was a horrifying thought that Michael had almost died, but she didn't lend it much of her brainpower. "I wouldn't trade you for all the Stevens and engagement rings in the world, partner."

Write a Day fill.

First off: Holy mother of Jesus watch “Junk Yard Dog.” If you don’t want to hug KITT by the end of it, you’re a soulless prick. Let’s just leave it at he went under begging Michael to save him.

Written in line with the Alpha Delta (or KIAD) AU wherein Kitt is the human the Foundation saved, and Michael is a sentient Trans AM. It’s great fun to play with, different dynamics and such. In this, Kitt’s fiancé was doing some shady dealings in addition to being a police lieutenant, and he arranged to have her killed when she found out, which is what she’s referring to in this passage. A lot of her motivations up to this point would have been trying to put her former self to rest if she can ever really move on. (I should rewrite Michael’s speech from earlier in the episode for her…)

Moving on. Despite the quote being sort of sad, I wanted to put a somewhat pleasant spin on this. Canon!Michael wasn’t cooperating so I had to fall back on this.
