As Best She Could - Knight Rider (mirror universe), Michael x April
Fights with Bonnie were nothing new. Even then, they weren't fights, more like… one-sided screaming matches that usually ended with April being hurt, sore and or crying. Last night, though—last night was unusually ugly.
April inspected her face in the mirror. Despite having been slapped, very painfully, multiple times, there no marks or swelling. At least it would be easy to physically hide. Her rattled nerves, though, were something else.
She looked down at the hearing aid in her hand; it had been acting up since last night, likely because Bonnie had struck the ear it was in. God, even partially deaf, that made her ears ring…!
Someone laid a hand on her shoulder, and April jumped. It was entirely too easy to sneak up on her, and she knew it but whoever did that—! She looked at the reflection and saw Bonnie right behind her. Her heart stopped and her throat constricted as she flicked her eyes down. "Morning, Bonnie," she mumbled.
Bonnie didn't answer, but dropped something on the bathroom counter. April's eyes shifted to it, and her jaw dropped. It was a mass of stuffing and brown fake fur, unrecognizable to anyone but her. "B-Bonnie, why—"
Bonnie turned her sharply, jerking her gaze up. "You want to mouth off to me again?"
Barely able to catch the words, April shook her head. She'd already been punished for "mouthing off" (asking to be left alone so she could sleep) last night. Was this some kind of sick part two? Knowing Bonnie, it likely was. "I'm sorry." The words were signed and softly spoken.
Bonnie fixed her with a cold glare before pushing her back and leaving her be. April waited until the door was closed before looking over the damaged object on the bathroom counter. She found herself tearing up, and, in her eyes, for damn good reason. If only she could walk away…

KARR noticed her depressed mood before she looked up and half-heartedly signed a greeting. Her eyes were down, her hair wasn't dressed neatly, and she looked like she'd been crying recently. April, is something the matter? he asked as she approached.
April looked up, but didn't answer, waving the words away. Somehow, her lack of chatter bothered the Trans AM. Bonnie? he questioned softly.
April dropped wearily onto her work stool, rubbing her eyes with the heels of her hands. She nodded after a moment. "Bad fight last night…" she signed.
Are you alright? KARR asked.
After a moment, April reached into her bag and pulled out the mess from the counter. "Bonnie tore up Janny."
Even signed, KARR didn't quite catch the meaning. "Janny" wasn't a term he recognized, nor was it in his databanks. He was about to ask when the repair bay door opened. April jumped, then relaxed when it was just Michael. "Hello, Michael," she mumbled.
Michael nodded shortly to KARR then glanced over at April—and her rattled state and the mess in her hands. "What the hell was that thing supposed to be?"
April pushed the stuffing back into the brown fur and tried to hold the mess closed. Now it resembled its actual form: a teddy bear… albeit ripped to shreds and missing a button eye.
Michael quirked an eyebrow. "Little old for stuffed animals, aren't you, April?" He didn't bother signing the words (in truth, he knew next to no sign language), but he at least speak loud enough that she could hear him, even with the fucked up hearing aid.
April shrugged, letting go of the bear. "Named Janny. Had him since two," she explained. "Got him when went deaf."
What happened to him? KARR asked.
April frowned. "…Dunno…" She mumbled. That was an answer for Michael. KARR had a feeling he knew—judging by April's demeanor, the damage and the way the bear had been sliced open, Bonnie had to have taken a kitchen knife to it. "Want to fix, but…" She held up the thing sadly. It almost looked beyond hope.
Michael grunted slightly in reply. There was a pause, then—"Taking KARR out for a drive."
April looked up from tucking the bear back in her bag. "Okay—being back by two. Bonnie testing him."
Michael nodded as he climbed into the driver's seat and backed out of the bay. For several minutes, he didn't speak. When he did: "Find a toy store."
I'm sorry, Michael? KARR asked. This was… new and different.
"Do it," Michael replied shortly.
Of course, Michael," KARR replied, already pulling up a list and overlaying it with a map. But may I ask—
"No. I have my reasons."
…Of course, Michael.

Try as she might to restuff and sew the bear back together, April just wasn't having much luck of it; too much of the stuffing was gone. Maybe it was time to let him go, she thought. But at the same time, she'd had this bear for twenty plus years. April pushed away the needle and thread and laid her head down on her workbench. God, what had she done to deserve this?
Someone thumped the tabletop, and April's head shot up, fully expecting to be yelled at. When she saw Michael standing in front of her, she let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. "Hi, Michael," she greeted softly.
Michael nodded briefly before setting a paper bag on the worktable. "Gonna take KARR in for tests," he said, turning away.
"Michael, what is?" April called after him, indicating the bag.
"Got it for you," he said dismissively before driving out of the bay with KARR.
April watched them leave, then picked up the bag—paper, plain, very nondescript. It didn't feel like food was in it, and even then, why would Michael bring her lunch? Perhaps the bigger question was what was in the bag? Only one way to find out—April opened the bag and pulled out its contents.
A teddy bear, much like how Janny had looked before this morning. Little brown eyes, soft brown fur, a blue ribbon tied around its neck. The stuffed animal sat in her hands almost unassumingly. April held it to her chest, touched. Someone—not just anyone, but Michael—had bought her a replacement. She wondered if he knew how much this meant to her.
God, she hoped so. The idea of someone who really cared enough to do something—even something as simple as replace a stuffed animal—made April want to pick up and carry on as best she could.
