Holy. Fucking. Shit. This episode scared the shit out of me. :noes: Y'know how you'll watch a scary movie through your fingers? Yeah, that was me. Just looking up the references for it scare the fuck out of me because (here there be spoilers) it's kinda hard to not be scared shitless watching or thinking about the Devil taking Al's shape and trying to fucking kill Sam. (/spoilers) I can see why so many QL fans think this episode is cursed.

That out of the way… Fluffy happy fill? What the fuck is that? This turned out surprisingly sad. And I finished it surprisingly quickly. I actually like it.

Kind of spawned on the fly this morning and I didn’t want to let it go. I couldn’t think of any place to house this scenario, and I wanted it to make sense in the context of the leap. That and this is one of my favorite episodes. (We'll see what happens when I get to MIA and The Leap Home.)

Despite the pairing factor not being obvious, assume Sam x Al is at play in some way here.

Confound these ponies they drive me to drink fic. Anyway—OMG PONY OTP FTWWWW.

Okay the characterization scared the shit out of me. You have two background ponies who have barely spoken in going on two seasons now with little in the way of voice reference, so we’ve got one hell of a challenge. Besides which, how do you characterize Derpy—mentally challenged, kinda nutty or just cockeyed? I was asked to write her as being in the same vein as A-Team Murdock in this case. And thus we have a strange little marriage of mind canon and fanon. :shrug:

Given that Doctor Whooves looks so much like David Tennant, that's where I pulled most of my inspiration and the mental voice when I wrote the dialogue*. The scarf was kind of a last minute thing, a (very) little tip of the hat to the Fourth Doctor's mile-long scarf. xD

Canon Notes: I'm dismissing Derpy having an older daughter (Dinky's sister), as seen in Sisterhooves Social in the 5 November 2011 episode. If I recall correctly, the Dinky there had a Cutie Mark, and it's not like animator's can make a new pony every single time. Crowd scenes would be such a bitch otherwise. So before you ask—I'm writing that Dinky off as a different pony, an extra, and there is no older sister. Only Zuul.

* I now want someone to spoof the line, "I'm the Doctor and I just snogged Madame du Pompadour! 8D " with Doctor Whooves and Derpy. Just sayin'.

Admittedly, I have a hard time picturing Devon working himself that sick. I do see him being a stubborn ass about going home sick, though.

The episode where Al mentions his sister is amazing. It made me cry twice. For your reference, Al's monologue (which is the background for this fic):

There was a girl named Trudy. She was retarded, Sam! Her IQ was lower than Jimmy's. And all the kids in the neighborhood, they used to tease her. Kids can be cruel. They'd call her names, like "dummy" and "monkey face." And I hated it. And I used to get in fights all the time over this. But that's what big brothers are for, right? My mother couldn’t handle it. That's probably why she ran off with this stupid encyclopedia salesman. But my dad tried to keep us all together. He was a construction worker. He went from job to job, and then when it took him to the Middle East, I wound up in an orphanage and she wound up in an institution. When I was old enough, I went back there for her, but it was too late—she was gone, Sam. Pneumonia, they said… How does a sixteen year old girl die from pneumonia in 1953, Sam?

That being said… My God, this is such a suicide inducer. I should not be writing this kind of fic, given my line of work. Why couldn't write my other, happier coda for this episode first?

Oh wait, because this was the prompt. Hey, it invited Al; the suicidal bunny just came up and started working. God I wanted to keep this dark shit outta my QL.

Okay, time to go scrounge up a happier fic. Sorry for the grimdark.

Wow, my first foray into Quantum Leap fanfiction and it's so freaking short. And it's suffering from a severe deficit of Sam x Al. *le sigh*

Anyway, the setting: the 1967 Detroit Riots. Why this, I'll never know. Sam's had canon brushes with history, why not?
I wanted this to read like the start of an earlier episode of Quantum Leap—so you have a nice voiceover from Sam, and then you cut into him as he's leaping into whomever. I have no idea what Sam is there to fix, or when Al is going to show up. >>;

I like writing for Sam—Scott Bakula has a very pleasant voice to write for. When I get a proper Sam x Al bunny, Al is going to be good to write for, too, also because Dean Stockwell has a good voice to write for, too.

And you guys thought that this AU was just Michael and KITT playing James Bond / Royalty. Nope.

Michael’s relationship with Wilton Knight in this AU is really quite bittersweet—the love and affection of a father and son, with the added layer of the formality of a king and his son, the prince. When Wilton starts to get sicker and sicker, Michael is promoted to Duke and starts ruling the country in his father’s stead. Then we cut in here, where Michael leaves for the United States for diplomatic visits, and… Well, use your imagination.

I think my German is much better this time around—instead of trusting Google Translate and iTranslate, I had an actual dictionary I borrowed from the German teacher at the high school. Why we never had German when I was in high school is beyond me. It’s probably because I was looking it up word by word and choosing the right one. ^^; I filled up a full lined page at jury duty on just the translations for most of this scene.
