"Wow, you really went ape shit under that Inti thinger, didn't you?" Power Joh teased.
"I suppose so," his victim, McCrane, replied with a shrug.
"You did, man!" Power Joh insisted. "You were taking pot shots at anything that'd move—you were all, pew pew pewpew and everything was all boom!" He mimicked the actions of firing a rifle, and of something exploding with the shots. "Never seen you cut loose like that."
McCrane clenched his hands into a fist. "It wasn't cutting loose!" he snapped. "I'm surprised that Boss and Saejima-chokan let me keep my position!"
"Hey, take it easy, McCrane," Power Joh said, holding up his hands passively. "We all go a little ape shit once in a while."
"Your cavalier attitude is not amusing," McCrane replied coldly. "There could have been casualties and I cringe when I think of the property damage I caused."
"Why so serious, McCrane?" Power Joh question, sweeping his arm across the empty Decker room. "It's just you and me in here—be yourself!"
"This is me being myself," McCrane shot back tartly.
"Aw, come on, McCrane," Power Joh teased, play punching his compatriot's shoulder. "We were given minds, souls and emotions—use 'em!"
"If my mind and soul give me such ugly emotions as violence and greed, I'll be quite happy remaining as I am, thank you." The tone in his voice left little room for discussion.
Power Joh quieted down, and for a moment, McCrane thought he'd have a little bit of peace. No such luck, of course. "Would you have been happier if all of us had never been brought online?" Power Joh asked, his tone waxing serious.
"No," McCrane replied adamantly. "If we had been brought online without such violent emotion, then yes. Yes, I would have been happy."
"But happy is a violent emotion," Power Joh pointed out, turning the marksman's words against him.
"It is a pleasant emotion," McCrane clarified. "No one was ever hurt by happiness."
"Then explain Schadenfreude," Power Joh said with a chuckle.
McCrane sighed in eternal patience of Power Joh's questions, all of which felt designed to get under his plating. "Schadenfreude is motivated by unpleasant emotion—spite, anger—"
"Lust?" Power Joh interjected.
McCrane scoffed. "Lust will sooner or later lead to any of the others."
"Is that why you didn't kiss her back?" the power shovel mech asked softly.
McCrane looked up from his paperwork, his expression one of faint surprise… or was it alarm? "How did you know about…?" How did Power Joh know that he never kissed Seia-san back?
"I heard her make an offhand comment to Dekkado-senpai," Power Joh answered, "and put the pieces together from there."
The pair was quiet, McCrane ducking his head down to continue working on his reports. "So… why didn't you kiss her back?" Power Joh pressed.
"Seia-san… She wasn't herself under Inti," McCrane explained shortly. "To have returned her kiss would have been to take advantage of her."
"Even though it's what she wanted?" Power Joh questioned.
McCrane let the comment fall between them without acknowledging it. "Why is all of this a topic of your concern?" he asked instead. "Women were never something that held your interest for more than a few moments."
"Just wondering," Power Joh replied casually. "Besides, you're one to talk."
"What are you getting at?" McCrane asked levelly.
"Women never held your interest very long either," Power Joh observed, tapping the paperwork. "Probably because you couldn't pull yourself away from your desk long enough to find one." He paused, musing. "Hell, you probably couldn't give into lust for anyone—female or male—if it kissed you full on the mouth."
"Nice try," McCrane said with a scoff, tartly closing the file folder and standing.
"Why so pissy?" Power Joh asked, a hint of irritation creeping into his voice. "'Cos you know I'm right and that if you got a kiss from someone you were interested in, you wouldn't do anything?"
"Is that a challenge?" McCrane queried snippily.
"You wanna call it a challenge?" Power Joh replied coolly.
"Try me," McCrane growled as he turned to leave the office.
The sound of Power Joh's office chair scrapping against the floor filled the room, and was followed by rapid footsteps. The power shovel caught McCrane by the wrist, which only fueled McCrane's irritation. "What now, Power Joh?" he snapped, whipping around to face his comrade.
Power Joh's eyes were blazing with uncharacteristically intense emotion. "You want a challenge?" he ground out. "Try not reacting to this." He jerked McCrane forward, making the marksman stumble and trip into Power Joh's frame. Before he could back away, Power Joh caught him by the chin and pressed his lips to McCrane's.
McCrane's eyes flashed brightly in surprise as he tried to push Power Joh away, before he realized how… how good the gesture felt, coming from Power Joh. Conflicting, confusing emotions rose up in his throat. The sheer bliss he felt, felt so right; and yet was he not just condemning emotion five seconds ago? Did he not warn against—
Power Joh reached up to lightly cup the side of his face with one hand, and McCrane melted, leaning into the yellow mech's frame and, almost shyly, kissing him in return. His awkwardness, his confusion, fell away when he returned the kiss, leaving a sense of peace and belonging in their place. He moaned very softly against his lips, brushing his thumb against Power Joh's cheek.
He felt Power Joh smile into the kiss, as well as the chuckle that followed. "So you give?" the power shovel asked, his voice right in McCrane's audio.
"Mmm… yeah," he replied softly. "Damn… Damn…"
"Figured you'd like that," Power Joh said smoothly. "Looks like you did get some emotion programming after all."
McCrane chuckled slightly before breaking away, rubbing his forearms in thought and mild embarrassment. "We're to tell no one of this, understood?"
Power Joh's good humor fell away. "Yeah, I guess that's what you would say," he grumbled, starting to turn away. "Just forget it all then."
McCrane reached out and caught him by the hand, making Power Joh pause. He leaned forward and kissed him again, very lightly nipping at his lower lip. "I never said it had to stop…" he whispered between kisses.
Power Joh's smile returned, and McCrane felt it press against his lips in a return kiss. "Is that a challenge?" he teased.
"Maybe," McCrane replied, teasingly vague.
Power Joh lightly nipped at McCrane's lips in reply. "You know I never turn down a challenge, McCrane."

So yeah, McCrane x Power Joh. They balance each other very nicely—Power Joh is action and energy, and McCrane is calm and collected. I would also like to point out that in episode 5, it’s canon-established that McCrane is a pacifist—in spite of the fact that he’s always carrying a gun, he never uses it unless it’s a last resort. When Power Joh is being attacked by the Gawan (AKA the Monster of the Week), McCrane didn’t even hesitate—he just pulled out the gun and started shooting! xD
For those of you who are asking yourself, “What about Seia?”: He never acted interested in her. Sorry. :/
Setting is after episode 17, “Inti the Evil Spirit.” Inti was a South American demon housed in an artifact that was touring Japan at the time. Inti fed off people’s greed and desires, often destroying entire civilizations in this manner; the incident to which Power Joh refers was when McCrane was under Inti’s control, he went out on a shooting spree to purge evil from Tokyo. Yes, he did go ape shit; no, no one was hurt, except maybe McCrane’s pacifist nature—he kinda scared the crap out of himself after he found out what he did.
