Winters in California were mild, but KARR still found himself getting a chill. It was his own fault, he knew, standing outside, but he really couldn’t take it in there anymore. Foundation board members and their guests, plus the few humans he knew by name, all milling around and socializing, yet excluding him? He was ignored enough as it was. KARR shivered and hugged himself, leaning with his arms on the balcony railing. Maybe he could spend all night out here. It was just the annual Christmas gala, and no one seemed to care that he was missing anyway.
Just as he thought it, the door behind him opened and shut quietly. He stiffened and turned, already trying to find an excuse to not be inside. His stance softened slightly when he saw who it was, and waited until she looked up at him to speak. “Hello, April.”
April smiled, and KARR instantly noticed that she was wearing make-up. ”Hello, KARR,” she signed. ”I look for you.”
”Me you found,” KARR signed back. ”You out here why?”
”There I couldn’t stay in,” April signed back, shaking her head sadly. “Use my A-S-L… Very awkward.”
”Your hearing aid where?” KARR asked, noting with more than slight concern that the earpiece to the device in question was conspicuously absent from April’s ear.
”Home” April signed after a moment’s hesitation. ”Me Bonnie force…”
KARR held up a hand. He didn’t need to hear the rest, that Miss Barstow made her leave the hearing aid behind; nor did he need to think about that, and how much it galled him that Miss Barstow claimed to love April, but treated her the way she did. The AI wanted to think about anything but that, not so close to Christmas, which (if April was to be trusted, and KARR trusted her implicitly) was supposed to be a time of love, hope, joy. Things they were often denied, but somehow managed to find in each other.
He focused his thoughts on April instead. She rarely varied her looks, keeping them as practical and low key as possible. Tonight, though, was an exception, and indeed the first time he’d ever seen her dressed up. For once, her hair was down, maybe even softly curled. The dress she wore was a very light blue, and made her eyes look even bluer and drew attention to her figure, the modest curves of hips, waist and breasts. KARR felt himself blush slightly at the thought, and flicked his eyes up to hers. He couldn’t help but smile softly at her.
April noticed. ”What?” she signed, though she did return the expression.
”Tonight beautiful you look,” he signed back.
Now it was April’s turn to blush. ”No I not.”
”Yes!” KARR protested, stepping closer. ”What beautiful dress! Good on you color look.” He gently tilted her face up to look at him. ”Did you do make-up yourself?”
April nodded in reply. ”Very beautiful,” KARR signed again.
April signed her thanks, then looked up at the sky. KARR tipped his head back as well. They sky was deep blue with little white pinpricks for stars. He looked back at April and signed, ”This dance me have?”
April smiled a little wider and nodded, stepping closer. It really wasn’t fair how handsome the AI was in a suit. ”Yes,” she signed.
KARR smiled and held out his hand. April took it, and laid her other hand on his shoulder. The AI squeezed her fingers reassuringly and laid his free hand on her waist, drawing her close—closer than was appropriate for “just friends,” but they’d long ago crossed that boundary (however clandestinely). He was acutely aware of how her waist felt under his fingers, the way her curves pressed against him; trying not to let thrilled, embarrassed color touch his cheeks, he started to lead her in a dance. The music from the gala couldn’t be heard, but he could imagine a tune to which they could dance.
A small, almost contented smile shaped April’s face. How long had it been since she’d danced with someone? Honestly, she couldn’t recall, but KARR far and away made up for it. She laid her head on his chest and let him lead.
KARR smiled down at her and, very softly, almost to himself, started to sing—
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Let your heart be light
From now on our troubles will be out of sight
Because of April’s hearing loss, compounded by her not wearing her hearing aid, KARR didn’t expect her to hear the song. Somehow, likely through the words reverberating in his chest, she caught them and looked up at him. He smiled slightly, starting over so she could read his lips.
April smiled gratefully and lifted her hand from KARR’s shoulder to curl the backs of her fingers against his throat. She looked up at him almost questioningly.
The AI smiled and continued to sing, carefully enunciating to make it easier for her to hear and feel the words.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas
Make the Yuletide gay
From now on our troubles will be miles away
April chuckled softly at that. KARR knew exactly what was on her mind—If only it were that easy. He couldn’t help but agree—if only he and April could be miles away from Miss Barstow, from the Foundation, from everything. He pushed the thought away, focusing on singing to April—
Here we are as in olden days
Happy golden days of yore
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more
Through the years we all will be together
If the fates allow
April drew herself closer to him, and it was clear that she was hoping the words of the song would come true for them.
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough
KARR stopped, lifted April’s face to his and brushed soft, affectionate kisses over her eyes and lips, letting her feel the vibrations as he whispered the final lines.
And have yourself a merry little Christmas now

Author: TheCrazyAlaskan
Fandom / Setting: Classic Knight Rider, mirror universe
Characters / Pairings: KARR x April, mentions of Bonnie x April
Rating: T
Genre: Romance
Suggested Music: Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – The Carpenters
Warnings / Notes: References to abuse; gratuitous yet IC ASL
Summary: Never let it be said that KARR couldn’t sing to April.
Written on the fly some time ago, finished it a few days ago. I just threw the working title on that shit and posted it.
Why do I love mirror universe KARR x April so? Anyway, enjoy the fluff.
Protip: If you can’t stand the Carpenters and want to use a different version of the song, no matter what, do not listen to the Judy Garland version. Unless you want to kill yourself, because she sings the suicide-inducing version, holy shit.
