thecrazyalaskan: (Michael x KITT)

"How ya feeling buddy?" Michael asked, running his hands over KITT's hood, now that they were out of the line of fire.

Poorly, KITT admitted. If he was human he would have rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

"What's wrong, KITT?" Michael questioned, concerned.

One of those bullets hit my scanner bar, the Trans AM explained.

Cursing softly, Michael knelt in front of KITT's bumper, surveying the damage. Sure enough, there was a hole in the red scanner bar. "How bad is it?" he said softly, laying a hand on the hood.

Michael, if you're touching me, I can't feel it, KITT replied. If Michael didn’t know the AI better, he would have suggested there was a tone of fear in his voice. My sensors are completely shot—I can't even see in front of me.

Michael wasn't given to cursing often, but for this occasion, it seemed appropriate. "Let's get you back to the Foundation," he said, patting KITT's hood reassuringly (possibly more for himself than the Trans AM, given that the latter couldn't register the touch, thanks to his damaged scanner).

KITT was about to say something—That would be wonderful, Michael, thank you—when the sky overhead opened up, and rain poured down on the two. The human groaned and opened KITT's driver side door, all but throwing himself into the seat.

You're going to get my upholstery wet, KITT pouted.

"That's a chance we'll have to take," Michael answered, slipping out of his jacket and tossing it on the backseat. He laid his hands on the steering wheel. "Ready to get patched up?"

There was a brief, almost microscopic pause. …Are you certain driving in this weather is safe, Michael? KITT asked after a moment.

"Yeah," Michael replied, quirking an eyebrow. "I know you hate driving in the rain, but—"

Michael, please, KITT cut off. Think of this from my perspective. I'm, for all intents and purposes, driving blind on poor road conditions. Surely you can imagine how that feels for me?

He could think about it from KITT's point of view. He knew the Trans AM just as well as, if not better than, himself, which included his aversion to driving in the rain. To be cut off from visual and tactile input in that kind of weather… "KITT, you trust me, right?" Michael asked, running his hand thoughtfully along the edge of the steering wheel.

Of course, Michael, KITT replied.

"Then trust me to get you home safe," he requested, brushing the backs of his fingers affectionately against KITT's vocal modulator.

KITT seemed to be thinking it over for a moment, weighing his personal comfort against the trust he had in his driver. If you promise to drive carefully, I'll trust you to drive me home.

Michael smiled warmly and started to back up, onto the main road. "You got it, partner."

That means no turbo boosts, KITT warned.

"I wouldn't dream of it," the human replied, shifting into drive and starting down the road at a respectable fifty-five MPH—five miles below the speed limit, the Trans AM was pleased to note.

The request was basically a play on a game of trust—two people in a car, the driver blindfolded and the other giving them verbal direction.

Sorry it's so short. I wanted to make it longer, but doing that felt so… extraneous and uncalled for. :c

It felt so good slipping back into canon Michael x KITT. I love my AUs, but canon like a comfortable pair of socks.
