KITT's presence. The words were spoken with a sort of intensity Devon hadn't heard in Michael's voice before, but before he could call attention to this or even process it in full, Michael was digging through a cardboard box, tossing aside crumbled newsprint. A look of horror passed over his face, then settled there, as he lifted something out of the box.

Suddenly, what it was, was very clear—a CPU unit, the blinking lights covering it blinking almost unassumingly, nestled safely in Michael's hands. KITT.  For several moments, Devon wasn't sure what to say, or even what to think. He had seen KITT's CPU before it had been installed into his Trans AM shell, but somehow… now was different.

But Michael—Michael had no such pre-knowledge.  He blinked at the unit in his hands. "KITT…" he mumbled. There was a pause, wherein KITT would have responded under normal circumstances. Michael pressed his lips into a thin line, and turned to leave the garage, shouldering past Devon with a single-minded focus. "I'm going back."

No further elaboration was needed. To hell with the newspapers strewn about the floor, Devon turned and followed Michael out of the garage and back to the car.

-.-.-.-

Michael hadn't spoken the entire ride to the house he described. Now that he was holding KITT's CPU in his hands, he was, if possible, even quieter. He didn't look over at Devon, who was pushing the speed limit as far as he could without drawing the attention of the local police force. Michael hadn't asked this, but he appreciated it.

Devon glanced at Michael out of the corner of his eye. The younger man was sitting almost hunched over the CPU in his hands, holding it extremely carefully. He was running his thumb over the edge of the unit, wordless, fixing it with an intense look. Aside from the motion of his thumbs, and the barely noticeable movement of his mouth as he spoke to the CPU unit, he wasn't moving.

What Michael was saying was clear only to him (and KITT, if he could hear the words when reduced to his most basic—he shook the words from his mind), and was something Devon had no place asking after.

-.-.-.-

There had been a comparison lingering in Devon's mind, just out of reach, as he watched Michael handle KITT's CPU. Now, watching him hand KITT over to April to do what she could, the comparison was finally clear—

It was like watching Michael handle an infant. The way he cradled the unit to his chest, the gentle touch as he gave KITT to April… Devon wondered how he didn't see it sooner.

-.-.-.-

Waiting was always the hardest. Michael had settled himself on the sofa in Devon's office, still choosing not to talk. He spent most of his time almost brooding, staring out the window.

This was the lowest Devon had ever seen Michael. Even when he had first come to the Foundation, was reborn a different man, and his subsequent… less than thrilled reaction—even then he had reacted better than this. It certainly said something, given that Michael and KITT had few kind words for one another.

How things had changed, Devon realized, that Michael was this concerned for KITT.

Day… Six of the Write-a-Day Challenge

Ooh, “Soul Survivor.” Mmm, one of the most beautiful, emotionally charged episodes in the entirety of the Knight Rider canon. Michael and KITT are fantastic in this episode.

…Okay the prompt said not Michael and KITT, not that they couldn’t be a part of it. >>; The revelation is subtle, which I prefer—I stand by the Word of God from David Hasslehoff where he said, “Michael was too much of a guy to let his feelings show.” In this case, they come through, and sort of reveal the way he’s come to think of KITT piece by piece.

Overall, I’m pretty pleased. Now, to wait for the next prompt. *srsnod*
