I'Chaya - Star Trek (TOS), Spock + Sarek
Jul. 20th, 2011 10:12 amVulcan children were brought up not to expect birthdays, or birthday presents. Spock shouldn't have been an exception, but when one's mother was human, that often wasn't the case.
Spock was three, Amanda recalled, when Sarek surprised him with I'Chaya, a sehlat form his own youth. Truthfully, the six-inch fangs were a little off-putting, but the creature was elderly even then and had lost a good deal of its aggressive nature.
Spock was instantly in love, which pleased Amanda, and… well, Sarek was Sarek, unreadable.
The pair had spent ten years together—ten lovely, happy years, and now… this. I'Chaya had saved Spock from a le-matya, and was in more pain than could be properly comprehended. Spock looked from I'Chaya to his father at his side to the healer, who declared the sehlat beyond help.
"You have a choice, Spock," the healer told him. "You can let him live a longer, but painful existence, or give him a peaceful release from his suffering."
Spock looked down at the sehlat, who harrumph-ed softly. The young Vulcan worked his fingers deep into the creature's fur, scratching his head. "He will be euthanized," he said softly after several moments.
It was over in minutes, and the walk home, for Spock, was one of the longest. As far back as he could remember, I'Chaya had been there, been his closest (only) friend; now there was no faithful friend padding (lumbering) along at his side. The world seemed a little… emptier. All while he missed his pet, he felt conflicted; as a Vulcan, he was not to feel such—
His father laid a hand on his shoulder, and Spock looked up at him. "You made the right decision, Spock," Sarek told him before removing his hand.
Spock could not readily recall a time when his father had ever touched him as his mother did, with something resembling emotion. It was almost something to treasure, in his thirteen year old mind at least. "Thank you, Father."

Oh God, this prompt. This one made me think. A lot. And then it lead me to a fandom I’ve not really played with in… seven years or so? Thank God for the first two seasons on DVD.
I know, I know, I should have written some proper Kirk x Spock, something off my bunny list or hell even some Garak x Bashir, but GOD, the pull of Sarek x Amanda is powerful. Besides—mother of fuck, it’s Mark Lenard. O Mr. Lenard, you wore the pointed ears well, as a Romulan commander and a Vulcan ambassador. See also DATVOICE
I was going to write this differently. I wanted to write it as the day Sarek gave Spock I’Chaya, a pet sehlat. The sehlat was canon ( described in TOS 02x44, “Journey to Babel”), but upon doing a little more digging, it turned out I’Chaya was Sarek’s pet when he was a boy first. But I did find the information detailed in the fic (which was pulled from the Animated Series 01x03, “Yesteryear”), and my brain lit up with this bunny. I ended up weaving the two episodes together, and am pleased with the end result. Not so much with the execution, but with the sentiment.
My point of view is all the hell over the place. Sorry about that. >>;
