This is a bad idea, Kitt.
She couldn’t blame Michael for thinking that—being brought back to the place where he’d almost lost his life so soon had to be an awful experience. “Scared?” she asked softly.
No, he denied. Anyone else could have taken the words at face value, but not Kitt. No, she knew her partner too well—he denied the words too quickly, and there was a quavering in his voice modulator that betrayed him and his fears.
“Michael, it’s alright to be scared,” she soothed, running her hand along the edge of the steering wheel. “Are you having second thoughts?”
I said I wasn’t scared, Michael denied again, though without as much heart.
“I can see it in you,” Kitt replied softly. “You’re acting the way I did…” She trailed off, revisiting things she hadn’t thought of in months.
What do you mean? the AI asked.
Kitt took a deep breath, letting it out slowly. “Michael, before we met,” she began slowly, “when I was still Katherine Long—“ She blew at the air, disturbing a loose strand of hair that had fallen in front of her eyes. “Why am I telling you all this, hmm? You already know what happened.”
She paused thoughtfully. “But I don’t think you know all of it.” She leaned back in the seat and closed her eyes, remembering. “When I regained consciousness a couple of days later, I could still see the muzzle flash in my face. I just… I couldn’t get it out of my mind.” She opened her eyes and directed her gaze at the Trans AM’s blue vocal indicator. “For months after that, every time someone lit a match… or if—if car headlights went in my face, I would flinch.”
How’d you get over it, Kitt? Michael’s voice was soft, unobtrusive.
“I didn’t,” Kitt admitted, still stroking Michael’s steering wheel. “It overcame itself. All I did was simply refuse to give in to it and did what I knew had to be done.”
When Michael spoke a moment later, it was difficult to tell if he’d given any thought to Kitt's words. Looks like what needs to be done is getting ready to go down.
“Will you be okay, Michael?” she asked softly, shifting gears.
If you’re there, I’ll give it a shot.

Title: Second Thoughts and Second Chances
Author: TheCrazyAlaskan
Fandom / Setting: Classic Knight Rider, Alpha Delta (KIAD) AU (Coda for “Junk Yard Dog,” 03x14)
Characters / Pairings: Michael, Kitt Knight
Rating: K+
Genre: General
Warnings / Notes: Brief mentions of PTSD; humanized female KITT
Summary: Sometimes you do need to go for a second time around.
I still have a love affair with “Junk Yard Dog.” I’ve always loved Michael telling KITT about facing his fears after he was reborn, so to speak, and I ended up copying down the speech—for this. I finally got this written.
Also, holy fuck Michael and KITT that can be interpreted as gen. (Still, they’re probably involved at this point in the proceedings but I didn’t make it explicit… *world implodes*)
