The day had been okay… enough. Getting dragged along to community Independence Day picnics was hardly April's definition of fun, but she wasn't stupid (no matter what Bonnie may have told her)—she was expected. Expected to, even with her hearing aid, have trouble hearing the world around her; expected to watch Bonnie and Mr. Miles none too subtly flirt with each other; expected to act her place. There was a reason she, if given the choice, she'd have stayed home with a convenient case of cramps.
Then again, if she had stayed home, she wouldn’t have seen Michael and KARR pull up next to Bonnie's car. It really wasn’t right how her heart fluttered when she saw Michael, but she wasn’t about to complain.
That had been in the middle of the afternoon; now it was evening, the sky pitch dark. April sat on the grass next to Bonnie, fidgeting and not making eye contact with anyone. Maybe they would get lucky and there would be a storm, some bad weather—
Michael sat down next to her and wordlessly passed her a bottle of water. April accepted it with mumbled thanks and averted eyes.
Michael tapped her arm to get her attention, and April jumped as she looked over at him. "Are you okay?" he asked, the concerned words coming out with a slightly gruff tone.
"Y-yes," she replied, offering him a somewhat shaky smile. She paused briefly before asking, "Time what?"
If Michael noticed or was bothered by her sign language grammar being verbalized, he didn't say anything as he looked down at his wristwatch. "Nine thirty," he replied.
"Already?" April replied, more than a little nervous.
Michael was about to question this when there was a distant whistle and a loud pop, the start of the fireworks. He glanced over at April, and frowned. The young woman had her hands clamped over her ears and looked… upset, close to frightened. "What's wrong?" he asked.
"Fireworks I don't like," April signed. "Very loud."
"I don't sign," he reminded, speaking directly into her ear so as to be heard over the sounds of the fireworks overhead and the people around them.
"I hate fireworks," April repeated, this time verbally. "Too loud and fuck up my hearing aid."
"Get up," Michael said shortly, tugging her up by the elbow.
April was getting ready to ask what was going on when Bonnie beat her to it. "Where are you and Michael going?" There was a deadly undercurrent to the words, one that only April truly understood.
"I don't like the way KARR sounds when he starts up," Michael replied easily. "I want April to look at him."
Bonnie looked at them suspiciously before letting it slide (likely solely because they were in public). Michael and April didn’t spare her a second glance—Michael pulled April through the crowds until they arrived at the familiar black and silver Trans AM. The doors automatically opened and Michael shuffled April inside, climbing in after her.
"KARR, soundproof the interior," he said, addressing the vocalizer near the steering wheel.
Michael, that feature hasn't been properly tested—
"Just shut up and do it," Michael cut off, his tone leaving no room for debate.
Yes, Michael, KARR replied, and instantly the inside of the vehicle went quiet. Where there had previously been the sounds of fireworks overhead, there was silence.
It took April a moment to fully comprehend the quiet, but when it finally registered, she looked up at Michael, almost bewildered. "Better?" he asked briefly.
She nodded, and despite him not knowing any of her second language, signed thank you as she leaned her head on his shoulder.
That sign, the gesture were pretty self-explanatory. He hmm-ed a reply, wrapping his arm around her shoulder and letting her enjoy the fireworks, in silence.

locoexclaimer: We've had a number of gay prompts, even a het-to-gay-or-possibly-het-the-other-way-around prompt. So any M/F pairing, fluff. No genderswap.
Mirror universe Michael doesn’t lend himself to fluffy things very well. His fluff is kind of weird. But whatever. It's cute, I rather like it.
