thecrazyalaskanIt was one of those signs where you could guess where they got the idea for it, and it was fairly clear what the sign was, even to a hearing person. To KARR, who had long ago learned sign, it was perfectly clear, but he still couldn’t help but sign back, "You pregnant?"
April nodded miserably. "Baby yours—no one else."
KARR didn’t doubt that. They may have ended up together by way of infidelity, but that had been a sanity saving mechanism on April's end, and she was eternally faithful to him. "When…?"
"Before month, maybe?" she signed back. "It I just learn."
KARR reached out and laid a hand on April's shoulder, trying to comfort her. It wasn’t going to be easy.
"I'm sorry, KARR," April signed suddenly.
"For what?" the AI questioned.
"Huge mess I make," she explained, "for both of us."
"April, no…"
"This on myself I bring," she explained. "I should—"
KARR reached up and stilled her hands. "I didn't know," he said, making it a point to speak so that she could read his lips before shifting back to signs. "Us could I think not… I to blame." That much he was certain—he could just hear someone asking him if he had even heard of a contraceptive…
"What do us do?" she signed, leaning against KARR's chest.
"Of something us think," he replied, brushing a kiss against the top of her head. He fell silent, and his hand gravitated to April's belly. She really couldn’t be far enough along for him to feel anything there, but he still found himself wondering and dreaming about the months to come.
