July 23, 1967 - Quantum Leap, Sam Beckett
Oct. 13th, 2011 09:54 pmIn my time spent leaping through history, I've seen some interesting things. I've seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. You'd think that'd get a quantum physicist down, but in the end, the inherent good in people always comes through.
As had become his custom when he leapt anywhere, he looked around himself, hoping he was back in the accelerator. No such luck this time around. He was looking down at the pavement, and noticed he was standing on a newspaper. Perfect—the date. He moved his foot and looked at the title and date: Sunday Free Press, Sunday, July 23rd, 1967 issue. Not much, but a start.
Suddenly, there was the sound of a pistol being cocked, cold and menacing, and someone was speaking to him. "Take one step and I blow your fucking head off."
Very slowly, Sam looked up and got a good, hard look at his surroundings—burning buildings and looting, and he was looking down the barrel of a fully loaded, very angry looking pistol, and the face of the equally angry man wielding it.
What else could he say? "Oh, boy…"

Wow, my first foray into Quantum Leap fanfiction and it's so freaking short. And it's suffering from a severe deficit of Sam x Al. *le sigh*
Anyway, the setting: the 1967 Detroit Riots. Why this, I'll never know. Sam's had canon brushes with history, why not?
I wanted this to read like the start of an earlier episode of Quantum Leap—so you have a nice voiceover from Sam, and then you cut into him as he's leaping into whomever. I have no idea what Sam is there to fix, or when Al is going to show up. >>;
I like writing for Sam—Scott Bakula has a very pleasant voice to write for. When I get a proper Sam x Al bunny, Al is going to be good to write for, too, also because Dean Stockwell has a good voice to write for, too.
